The 7th largest city in the United States, San Antonio prides itself on a diverse, expressive culture. The city has always been a crossroads and meeting place. Sounds and flavors of Native Americans, Old Mexico, Europeans, the Wild West, African-Americans and the Deep South mingle and unite here. A band of Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon a river in 1691, and because it was the feast day of St. Anthony, they named the river “San Antonio.” Father Antonio Olivares founded the city in 1718. From 400-year-old missions to 21st-century biomedical research, San Antonio reflects a deep heritage of spiritual intellect and culture as it reaches into the future. We are a city of Fiestas, with a lot of fun and beauty to share with our visitors. We offer nature parks and theme parks, golf courses and elegant shopping destinations. Our museums offer the art of the world and the science in our land. We celebrate with music, dance and sports.
